All year long we celebrate the successes of people and families supported. Every year, the month of March is celebrated as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, which gives the Perry County Board of Developmental Disabilities (PCBDD) the opportunity to provide education and resources to our community. Each week during the month of March, PCBDD will be spotlighting a variety of resources, programs, and services that PCBDD offers. This week we are featuring trauma.
PCBDD is using a Trauma Response Approach to help people in their everyday lives. It can significantly change the person’s life for the better and bring an empathetic perspective to the ways we support someone who is showing others that they feel unsafe.
How PCBDD uses the Trauma Response Approach:
• Conducting person-centered planning that is informed with knowledge of the ups and downs of a person’s whole life experience.
• Making training on trauma available to all team members.
• Helping the people we serve develop resilience.
• Collaborating with other agencies through Trauma Responsive Planning.
• Acknowledging the secondary trauma that family members and paid supports can experience.
• Making great efforts to not unintentionally re-traumatize someone.
Trauma Informed Biographical Timelines (TIBT): Our growing local team facilitates TIBT as needed on a case-by-case basis.
• These involve research and gathering information to map out someone’s full story.
• It pays close attention to strengths, life stressors and trauma experiences.
• TIBTs help to take a step back and look at the life someone lived to bring them to where they are today.
• These are a great training tool that can reframe behavior and help others know how to respond best to the person they are working with.
• They also identify actions, approaches, and interventions that will help the person heal from past stressors and build resilience factors like positive connections with others; belonging; external supports; self-esteem; and voice, choice, and control.
PCBDD-provided training: PCBDD facilitators provide training to help people, providers, treatment teams, schools, family members, and others understand the trauma-related services and supports available.
Services and programs PCBDD offers for people and families dealing with trauma and mental health:
• Service and supports for behavioral supports are available to anyone who is eligible for PCBDD services.
• Behavioral support services
