ZANESVILLE — The Muskingum County Community Foundation is now seeking applicants for the following 2020 scholarships available only to current graduating seniors or past graduates of Philo High School. All applications are available on the Muskingum County Community Foundation’s website, mccf.org and must be submitted by March 20, 2020.

2020 Josh Atwell Memorial

“Joshua Keith Atwell was 22 years old when he passed away. He was a kind, funny and considerate young man. He made us laugh and the world was a better place with him in it. I want to share an example of who he was. While he was working at Amazon one night, he trained an older woman. He came home almost in tears. He told me he didn’t think she was able to do the work but that she told him how much she needed her job. He loved his family, friends and his cat. We will miss him forever.”

2020 Beckwith Farm Scholarship

Applicants for the Beckwith Farm Scholarship must be current seniors or alumni of the Franklin Local School District pursuing a degree in education or nursing and should include copies of high school and/or college transcripts (including GPA) and the student’s Student Aid Report (SAR) from the 2020-2021 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

As each application is thoroughly reviewed by a Selection Committee and the scholarship is highly competitive, applicants are encouraged to put forth their best effort. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

2020 Margaret Carol Barringer Scholarship

Applicants for the Margaret Carol Barringer Scholarship must be 2020 graduating seniors of Philo High School with a minimum GPA of 3.0 intending to enroll in an accredited college, university, or institute. The ideal candidate will have a record of academic achievement as well as a history of participation in extra-curricular and community activities.

Margaret Carol Barringer was a proud graduate of Philo High School. Despite being widowed at the age of 32, she worked multiple jobs to ensure that her children could attend college. It is the hope of the selection committee that the beneficiary of this scholarship does not take higher education for granted, but that he or she views it as a privilege not available or accessible to everyone.

Candidates must submit academic transcripts, 2 letters of recommendation (1 from a member of the Philo High School Faculty and another from a community member not related to the applicant), and a 1-page résumé. Finalists will be expected to interview with the selection committee.

2020 Mike Strohl Memorial Scholarship

Applicants for the 2020 Mike Strohl Memorial Scholarship must be 2020 graduating seniors of Philo High School.

Mike Strohl was a math teacher and coach at Franklin Local School District from 1975 until he retired in 2006. He died suddenly and unexpectedly in 2015. He taught life lessons on and off the field. His family would like to honor his memory by providing a Philo senior with a scholarship. Mike always found time to help his students with math concerns. He tutored before school, after school, during lunch, study hall and on the phone. His pay was the excitement to see a student understand and believe in themselves. After running into students after they graduated, they were thankful and appreciative that someone cared and made time to help them.
