The annual MacGahan Festival is scheduled for this weekend in New Lexington, students from the Bulgarian Language School of Chicago have toured the village with stops at the cemetery where Januarius MacGahan is buried and the statue placed downtown in his honor.

Considered the “Liberator of Bulgaria” MacGahan was a war correspondent and native of New Lexington. MacGahan’s articles in the New York Herald and London Daily News describing the atrocities committed by the Ottoman Empire during the Russian-Turkish War (1877-78) were considered a factor that kept England from siding with Turkey and helping secure Bulgarian independence.
