NEW LEXINGTON – The Perry County Sheriff’s Office is presenting a Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs (HOFNOD) event on Saturday, July 31. The event will take place at the Perry County Gun Club located at 4957 Township Road, just outside New Lexington. The Youth Fishing Derby is being hosted by the Perry County Sheriff’s Office and Perry County Transit.
Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. and runs till 10 a.m. Prizes will be awarded in four age categories: 5 and under, 6-9, 10-13, and 14-17. T-shirts and fishing poles will be provided for the participants as well as door prizes for the young anglers who catch the biggest fish.
This year’s event will be the third time the Perry County Sheriff’s Office has hosted a HOFNOD Youth Fishing Derby. The first year saw slightly over 100 kids participate. Last year that number increased to 300 young anglers. With those numbers in mind, the Sheriff’s Office has ordered 350 rod & reel outfits that will be given away at the 2021 event.
Sgt. Brandon Forester of the Perry County Sheriff’s Office reports that the lake will be stocked with fish from Marlowe’s Hatchery in Hocking County. The lake at the Gun Club already has fish swimming in its waters, but it will soon have more.
“We’re putting 200 bluegills, 100 hybrid bluegills, 10 pounds of fathead minnows, and 150 largemouth bass that are one pound and up in the lake prior to the Youth Derby,” Forester reported.
Members of the Perry County Anglers will be staffing the weigh-in booth for the youngsters to bring their catches to the scales. Prizes will be awarded following the hot dog lunch being provided by the Perry County Sheriff’s Office.
