SHAWNEE — Officials are investigating a Friday morning fire near downtown Shawnee that left a family homeless.

The Shawnee Fire Department was dispatched to 580 West Main Street Friday morning shortly before 8 a.m.; firefighters found the home there was already completely engulfed by the time they arrived on the scene.

At least four additional Fire and EMS squads from surrounding villages were called to the scene. No one was inside the house at the time of the fire, although one fireman commended members of the family who arrived soon after the fire was reported for their assistance at the scene.

A resident of a neighboring house was evacuated and electricity was turned off along Main Street while crews fought to extinguish the blaze.

No injuries were reported and the house was ruled a total loss. The cause of the fire is unknown.
