Judge Luann Cooperrider
Juvenile court
Judge Cooperrider and court staff including all probation officers met to discuss programs for youth and families. The judge and staff are developing a probation program for youth of all ages who need intervention to keep the youth and their families from having to be involved in the criminal justice system.
Judge Cooperrider heard five Children Services cases during the week. She placed three children with grandparents and two children in foster care. All parties were ordered into residential treatment programs for drug and alcohol treatment, and mental health.treatment through the Youth and Family program was ordered for each family.
• A 17-year-old girl from Thornville was charged with speeding, her second moving violation. She was ordered to pay court costs; her driver’s license was suspended for 90 days; and she was ordered to complete a remedial driving program.
• A 17-year-old girl from Crooksville was charged with underage consumption. She was ordered to pay court costs; her driver’s license was suspended until she turns 18 and has completed drug and alcohol treatment through the Choices program and has paid its cost; and she was placed on probation.
• A 14-year-old girl from Shawnee was charged with unruliness. She was ordered to pay court costs and attend counseling with the Perry Behavioral Health Choices Healing Program, and she was placed at the ALPHA School program on probation.
• A 15-year-old boy from New Lexington was charged with theft for stealing a pair of shoes. He was ordered to pay court costs, attend counseling with the family grief program; write a letter of apology and send it to the victim with a copy to the court within three days, and complete a theft program and pay its $50 cost.
• A 14-year-old boy from Junction City was charged with truancy. He was ordered to pay court costs and attend anger management counseling, and was placed at the ALPHA School, placed in the Family Wellness program, and placed on probation.
• A 16-year-old girl from Somerset was charged with possession of marijuana. She was fined $150 plus court costs; ordered to continue counseling with the I.O.P. program and family drug counseling, and to complete the Choices program and pay its cost; and was placed on probation.
Probate court
Judge Cooperrider presided over two emergency guardianships and one inventory hearing in probate court. She signed one search warrant and performed one wedding ceremony.
