Former Glenford resident Robert Dale (“Coop”) Cooperrider, Sr., 76, went to be with his Lord Oct. 4, 2013, surrounded by family.
A memorial service will be held 11:30 a.m. Oct. 10 at Maranatha Baptist Church, 7747 E. 6th Ave. in Anchorage, Alaska, with Pastor Charles England officiating. He will be laid to rest at the Fort Richardson National Cemetery with full military honors.
Coop was born January 28, 1937, in Glenford, Ohio, to Albert and Lulu Cooperrider. He served his country beginning in 1954 with the Ohio National Guard and with the U.S. Air Force in 1955. In 1958, he married the love of his life, Margaret Wiseman, whom he met as a teenager when they were neighbors. They were married for nearly 55 years and raised two children, Twyla and Robert, Jr.
He transferred to Dickenson, ND and then to Elmendorf Air Force Base in Alaska in 1964, just weeks before the ’64 quake. In 1966, he again transferred to Sault St. Marie, Michigan, retired in 1967 and moved back to Alaska, the land that he loved.
He began working Civil Service at Elmendorf AFB as a pipefitter and enjoyed hunting and fishing every chance that he could. After more than 35 years, he retired from Civil Service in 1992. In 1998, the Alaska State Legislature officially honored Coop for his tireless efforts in community service.
Coop was a great husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be deeply missed. He was a hard worker, generous and kind with a quick and humorous wit that he used for teasing his loved ones.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Lulu; sister, Patty Geiger of Ohio; and one infant great-granddaughter, Mikayla of Anchorage, AK. He is survived by his loving spouse, Margaret; brothers John of Ohio and George (Marian) of Virginia; sister, Sarabelle (Roger) Satterfield of Ohio; children, Twyla (Tom) Schulman of Palmer, AK; and Robert, Jr. of Anchorage, AK; three grandchildren, Benjamin (Anna) Schulman of Anchorage, AK, Crystal (Jason) Reem of Palmer, AK and Justin Schulman of Bend, OR; and three great-grandchildren, Madisyn and Michael Reem of Palmer, AK and Emma Schulman of Anchorage, AK as well as many close and dear friends.
