NEW LEXINGTON – The Lady Panthers continued their hot streak as they swept Crooksville 3-0 in a clash of Perry County and MVL rivals on Oct. 5.
New Lex won the first set 25-8, the second 25-16, and the third set 25-10.
The hosts jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead in the first set that was kickstarted by kills from both Trinity Cook and Aubri Spicer. New Lex then went on a 7-4 run that was highlighted by a Jerilynn Koehler kill. A Lizze Ellis ace, along with a kill from Nora Duperow, put the Lady Panthers in cruise control as they took the first set 25-8.
“I think (our chemistry) has definitely improved over the course of the season,” Spicer said. “We’ve made so much improvement with our communication, our back row is constantly talking with our front row, and I think we have so much energy.”
The second set saw New Lex start hot yet again, jumping out to a 6-2 lead. A Kenzie Printz tip put the Lady Ceramics within three, but the Lady Panthers would go on a long run again, as Cook and Nora Duperow provided crucial kills.
A Spicer kill made it 18-7, but a couple of points later Printz capped off a quick 3-1 run with a kill. The teams would trade blow after blow for the next few points, but the New Lex lead was too much for the Lady Ceramics as they took the second set 25-16. The Lady Panthers had a 2-0 match lead.
New Lex, in full control now, didn’t let off the gas in the third set. An 8-1 run for the Lady Panthers after an Abby Wilson tip increased the score to 17-5. The Lady Ceramics couldn’t overcome the deficit, and New Lex took the third set 25-10 as well as the match, 3-0.
We obviously have a lot of work to do, but I think we’re heading in the right direction,” Koehler said. “Every day is a new challenge, and we have to have the same mindset of growth and improving ourselves.”
Koehler and Spicer continued their stellar form, with Spicer earning 13 kills and Koehler 10. Koehler also had three digs and four aces. Duperow had four aces, six digs and six kills. Braya Jones had 12 digs, while Lizze Ellis had 26 assists.
Printz had four kills along with three digs to lead Crooksville. Taisia Riggs notched 11 assists and 11 digs, while Jailynn Theisen had ten digs. Grace Frame had three kills, two digs and one ace on the evening.
