LUCASVILLE — In a trip that was more than 90 miles, the Lady Panthers made the drive worth it as they took the win in the OHSAA Sectional Semifinal on Feb. 12 with a 62-53 victory over Minford.
The game started out with a close matchup as New Lexington had 13 points to Minford’s 12.
Freshman Aubri Spicer was there to play as she scored 10 of those 13 points from five inside-the-arc field goals.
Freshman Kim Kellogg was her right-hand partner behind the painted line with her three-point drain to have the one-point lead after one quarter of tournament play.
Minford outshined the Lady Panthers in the second with seven field goals, two of which were three pointers.
Although they were on an offensive streak, the Lady Panthers made the play difficult as their offense shined behind Spicer and Kellogg.
Both had two field goals, and Kellogg added two from the charity line.
Lydia Stephens showed her known skill with an easy three-point swish to get her Lady Panthers to a halftime score of 26-30, though Minford led.
Head coach Jay Chadwell had to have pumped them up at halftime because the Lady Panthers were relentless on the court in the third quarter.
Spicer was everywhere at all times with seven points on the quarter, leading the way for Emma Abrams and Riley Harris to add two layups to the board.
Kellogg and Harris teamed up to total three for four from the foul line and hold Minford’s offense to only seven points.
The Lady Panthers finally got the lead back, 40-37 with one more quarter to go.
Minford found 16 points in the final quarter, stringing together all shots from the arc to the foul line.
New Lexington had the advantage of Minford fouling, giving them a total of seven free throws.
Abrams went four for five and Maggie Skillman went two for two from the line, along with two field goals from Skillman shortly after.
Kenadee Dillon joined in the scoring streak with a three-point drain from the corner.
Kellogg came to life again with two field goals, one of each, for her Lady Panthers and Spicer grabbed two possessions for two layups.
