POWELL – The New Lex girls basketball team couldn’t overcome a slow start and took their first loss of the season against Olentangy Liberty on Nov. 24.
The Lady Patriots won by a score of 59-24.
“(Liberty) is a team that we think will compete in the Division I regional,” New Lex Head Coach Jay Chadwell said. “We think they’re that good, definitely a district final team. So, we like to challenge our girls, and obviously we didn’t rise to the challenge tonight.”
Liberty raced out to an early 10-3 lead and increased that to 17-5 after the first quarter. Sophomore Gigi Bower started off with the hot hand for the hosts.
“Their physicality bothered us early and we kind of never got in a rhythm,” Chadwell said. “They shot the ball really well.”
The Lady Patriots continued their stellar start with 17-point quarter in the second, going into halftime with a 34-7 cushion. Bower had 15 at half and the Liberty defense was swarming the Lady Panthers. New Lex wasn’t getting any shots to fall.
“We knew we had a really tough test with these group of kids New Lexington’s got, so it’s good for us to get off to a good start,” Liberty Head Coach Tom Waterwash said.
The Lady Panthers came out of the break with an 11-point third and a six-point fourth, but the lead was too much as the hosts scored 25 points in the half to put the game away.
Bower lead all scorers with 18 points. Aubri Spicer lead New Lex with nine points.
