NEW LEXINGTON – Both the New Lexington and Sheridan wrestling teams saw champions crowned at the MVL Wrestling Championships on Feb. 13.
The Panthers, one of the top teams coming into the meet, fielded the most champions with five. The Generals crowned three themselves and had two others come in third place.
The hosts were led by Shaun Pletcher, who won via majority decision over River View’s Austin Philabaum to secure the title. This was Pletcher’s fourth straight championship in as many years, making him only the sixth MVL wrestler to accomplish this feat in its 50-year history.
Wyatt Abele, Hunter Rose, and Trey Helwig swept the 145, 152 and 160-pound weight classes to add to New Lex’s strong run. This was the first championship for all three wrestlers.
In the 106-pound class, it was the battle of the Burkharts. Ethan (New Lex) pinned Elijah (Morgan) to earn his first title as well.
For the Generals, Alexander Crane continued his stellar season, securing the title at 120 by tech falling Coshocton’s Ethan Dixon 7-1. This marked Crane as a three-time champ in the MVL.
Jordan Barnett, who was named tournament co-MVP, won the title in a rematch with New Lex’s Jacob Dold at 170. Barnett won his second title.
Logan Morris made sure he left the MVL as the top dog at the 285-pound class, winning by decision over Maysville’s Gauge Samson. This also gave Morris his second MVL title.
Both New Lex and Sheridan are set to compete at the sectional meet at Alexander High School on Feb. 27. The official start time will be confirmed on www.baumspage.com/.
